Day 5 of my 12 days of Blogmas features my technology review of my first gaming laptop the Acer Predator Helios 300, “Amazon’s Choice” (I’ve also posted my unboxing video here)

I got this laptop a year ago. At the time it was what Amazon designated as Amazon’s Choice but I don’t see the title now. It has over a thousand reviews on Amazon and a 4.5 rating.

Start up time

I used an Apple MacBook Pro for 5+ years. After a while, it took five to ten minutes to even start up. You have to understand, I used this laptop every day and so every day it would take five to ten minutes to even start up before I could even get on with homework, work, what ever.

This laptop operates using a SSD. When I first got it, the laptop fires up in mere seconds. You can instantly start working on what you’re meant to do.

Now that I’ve used it for a year and installed a few intense games and other programs, the laptop starts up in about 8 seconds —- watch the video for more details and to see it in action.

It also shuts down in about five seconds.

Graphics

The graphics card runs pretty smoothly except for a few occasions of screen tearing during gaming. If you don’t use it for gaming the graphics are still crisp and clear.

Speed

Download and upload speeds are dependent on individual internet connections. The processor is pretty strong, Intel Core i7-7700HQ CPU. I believe most laptops run in the i5 to i7 range even in this year, so it’s still pretty top notch for now.

Issues

There have been reported technical problems with the sound card. After a few months the laptop sound would be staticky. The sound comes from underneath the laptop as well. It’s kind of a strange design to me. To get around this I plug my laptop with an hdmi to project my screen onto a larger screen anyway and so I use the sound that plays from an external source. I also restart my laptop if I absolutely need to have the sound working.

Also the laptop gets pretty hot during gaming. I show the specific degree and fan RPM in the video below. I bought a great laptop fan to help it cool down.

What are some other gaming laptops out there and your experiences with them? If you have this laptop, what’s it like?
