I meant, we ate (a lot) in Seattle. There’s so much delicious food.Â
There’s a reason why there’s the word “eat” in sEATtle, right?
Journal
It was a cold morning. Our flight was early due to the fact that we waited a few more days to book. Airline prices increased approximately $20 when we waited one more week closer to our desired departure dates in the summer. We wanted to book the summer season for our trip to Seattle because summer is the best season to visit according to our research. We ended up choosing the beginning of summer (work schedules are a bit lighter in the beginning of June). Although, touring Seattle in the rain would lend to a more authentic experience of being/living in the city, we figured that our Californian tendencies and dislike of rain would spoil our first time visits. (don’t judge us, please)
As we boarded the plane, we realized the drawbacks of booking Saver Fare tickets. There was barely any cabin space left for our carry-on! These Saver Fare tickets are tickets on Alaska Airlines that are cheaper than their regular fares, but they don’t include the option to pick one’s seats until showing up at the gate. Pretty bad situation for families and those who don’t want to fly separate from their travel companions. However, we managed to snag the very last space for our carry on luggage so that we didn’t have to check in our bag (which means more time for fun in Seattle). Checking in bags would incur additional cost (but it’s free if the aircraft doesn’t have any more space). Travel has just gotten more expensive, hasn’t it?
Where to Eat and Where to Go
(scroll to the bottom for a condensed tl;dr list)
Pike Place Chowder
Get the sampler of four different clam chowders. It was enough for the two of us and we got to try four different clam chowders! And still have room to sample the rest of Pike Place Market, like the cheese! Must save room for the cheeeese!
Pro tip: there are extra pieces of bread stored on the rack holding utensils. The extra bread pieces with crust are at eye-level, but the soft insides without crust are located on the top shelf!
Beecher’s Cheese
The smell of cheese wafts through the crisp, morning air in blue Seattle. A line forms down the sidewalk. We sample two types of cheese, the cheese curds and the signature flagship. The cheese curds inspire Jo’s poutine cravings and thus, a glorious recipe for poutine made with Beecher’s Cheese is born! Is there such a thing as too much cheese?
Whew, eating one of the most savory, creamy, and cheesey mac n cheeses calls for a spicy bubbly drink. Rachels Ginger Beer seems to be all the rage here.
Rachel’s Ginger Beer
The ginger beer (it doesn’t have any beer in it) is refreshing and came in a variety of flavors. There was white peach, peach guava, and much more. They ran out of the white peach, so we ordered the peach guava. After ordering, Jo pointed out that there’s a flavor called extra! As if that wasn’t funny enough.
RGB (not to be confused with the notorious RBG) can be found in a lot of drinks in Seattle. It seemed to be the predominant ginger beer supplier.
The Pink Door
Don’t miss this inconspicuous spot. Hidden gem, concealed fun, and tucked away tryst. The aerial yoga performer even came down to talk to us and she was so sweet! She has over a decade of experience doing aerial yoga and performing.
I didn’t take many pictures inside. they said no pictures during the show. This is the outside though!
AND THE PROWL FOR FOOD CONTINUES THE NEXT DAY
Biscuit Bitch
Jolt awake, get loud, and munch on biscuit and grits from Biscuit Bitch. No, that last word was not a typo, that is the name of the establishment serving the loudest and homey-est plate of biscuits and grits.
We tried the Seattle Fog (clever play on the name of the famous London Fog). It features vanilla and orange zest. Delicious.
MoPOP = Museum of Pop Culture
We learned how to play a guitar, bass, drum set, and mixer at this fine museum. It’s not free (why aren’t museums in Seattle free? Is it the lack of income tax? Not that I would complain if I were a resident of Seattle. No income tax sounds like a beautiful dream, but not if it’s compensated by high property tax). Anyway this museum was very fun. Rooms to jam to your heart’s desire? Amazing.
The singing vestibules could be improved as they featured very very old songs. I can just imagine the potential of having an Adele song or a Beyonce song for a patron to just belt to their heart’s desire in one of those recording studio style rooms! Epic.
I found the Indie game showcase to be great. I loved seeing Overcooked on a giant screen and being able to actually play the game.
With some time to kill, we went to Lake Union Park that had great views of the Seattle Space Needle. We didn’t want to go into the Space Needle to get a view of Seattle, we wanted to get a picture OF the Space Needle in Seattle, right?
After this pit stop, we proceeded to the Fremont neighborhood for dinner at the James Beard Award finalist restaurant Joule.
Joule
It’s great Asian fusion fare. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, food, and the people.
Still hungry for dessert, we took a lyft to Capitol Hill to try a very highly rated place serving Pie and cocktails at Pie Bar.
Pie Bar
Don’t hate on the disposable cutlery because the taste of the pie sort of made up for it! They offer a unique pie filling which is an amalgamation of berries (including marionberry).
Paseo
A Caribbean sandwich place called Paseo was very highly rated on Yelp as well. The sandwich was great and the service was very nice. The sandwich is stuffed with meat and toppings. It sort of fell apart.
Hot Cakes
More room for dessert? Of course! Stumbled upon this cute, cozy, and decadent chocolate place, Hot Cakes. They started at food festivals and now have this shop.
This little neighborhood brought us many good vibes. We wanted to explore it some more and so we came across this cute, modern coffee shop called Miro Tea at which I ordered an elderflower lemonade that was very strong.
I also want to point out how amazing these safe space signs are? I love the open and loud display of support for safe spaces for LGBT in Seattle.
And to soak up more scenery and tourist pictures, we headed to Kerry Park. The park offers the best views of downtown Seattle and the Seattle Space Needle.
After some photos, we made our way back to Pike Place, the epicenter of food and tourist things. There’s a sushi chef at Sushi Kashiba who worked for Jiro, the man of “Jiro Dreams of Sushi.” We wanted to give it a try and it was alright.
Retired to the hotel and watched some TV after the omakase set. We walked a lot today.
The Crumpet Shop and Piroshky Piroshky
The next morning, we ate these small things called crumpets. These were essentially super buttery, inflated pancakes. Warm and fluffy with a bit of crisp, these crumpets hit the spot on a cold day.
The line for the Piroshsky Piroshsky was out the door. They ran out of the one that I had wanted, Beef & Mushroom, so I took the Beef & Onion. Jo snatched the last Salmon pate which is one of their very popular piroshky fillings. I don’t know if they bake more once they run out but they seem to run out in the afternoon of some of their popular ones.
I was still craving biscuits so I ordered from Biscuit Bitch again. Wow! I stopped by the same restaurant twice in one trip. I must’ve really liked it.
We wrapped up with a stop at Beecher’s Cheese to grab some cheese curds to take with us on the airplane and back home. Now that we have cheese curds, we can make some melted cheese with gravy over french fries also known as poutine!
When you’re in Seattle you have to try these places! Can you believe it didn’t rain once when we were in Seattle? It started to rain when we left.
So, in summary here’s a list of the best places we ate at/recommend:
Brunch:
Dinner:
Dessert:
Snack:
What is a trip without great food and company?
